Giving Back
By Joy Armstrong
In preparation for your wedding, guests will buy gifts to give you to help celebrate your marriage. Are you looking for a way to give back after so many people have given to you? Donating to a food bank might just be the answer.
The Nebraska Food Bank Network, Inc. and the Food Bank of Lincoln are two major food distributors in Nebraska. The Nebraska Food Bank Network, with its headquarters in Omaha, services over seventy-seven counties in Nebraska and sixteen counties in Iowa. In 2005, the Nebraska Food Bank Network distributed over 5,000,000 pounds of food and household products to over 350 agencies. The Food Bank of Lincoln distributes food products to people in need in 16 counties in the southeast part of Nebraska. Their average distribution is 2,632,597 pounds of food per year to 209 agencies.
You might be wondering how you can help. A way for you to lend a hand is by donating your leftover reception food that was not served. If you anticipate having leftover food, please inform your caterer that you would like to donate the food to a food bank, have them package and refrigerate the food, and be sure to schedule a pick-up time with the food bank closest to your reception hall or caterer. The food will be picked up shortly after your wedding, reheated and served to hungry men, women and children at a shelter, soup kitchen, or other organization in Nebraska. For the Nebraska Food Bank Network you can contact Jewell Knapp at 402-331-1213. For the Food Bank of Lincoln, Nancy Evans is the contact at 402-466-8170, extension 102.
Remember…every donation makes a difference.
