Picture Perfect: Engagement Session Inspiration and Advice from Caitlin and Camera

Local photographer shares advice for creating an authentic engagement session

You’re engaged—congratulations! Now what? One meaningful way to document this new chapter is with a photo session that reflects your relationship. That’s exactly what Olivia McCown and Erik Skoog did with local photographer Caitlin Manley of CAITLIN AND CAMERA (@caitlinandcamera). Engagement photos not only serve as a memento of this exciting beginning, but also as an opportunity to showcase your love story, interests and personal style. Inspired by the moodiness of their upcoming fall wedding, Olivia and Erik chose historic locations in Omaha and a fun evening at Beercade for their picture-perfect session. “Caitlin made the entire shoot so fun,” Olivia says. “The fact that she was able to capture those moments in a really authentic way was exactly what we were looking for.” Striking the perfect balance between playful and elegant, nearlyweds and Manley created a series of images that tell a story beyond the lens.

But finding the best location or perfect outfit can feel intimidating, but fear not—it’s easier than you think. Manley suggests incorporating items, activities, or places that you and your partner enjoy. Consider what you love doing together as a couple. “Whether it’s going on nature walks, playing musical instruments, cooking at home, or simply getting a beer at your favorite bar, doing an activity can elevate your photos to something more special and personalized,” Manley explains. A sentimental location can also be the ideal backdrop to tell your story. It could be your first date spot, a local dive bar, your home, college campus, favorite bookstore—the options are truly endless! Manley advises reaching out to businesses to inquire about photo permissions prior to the session.

Manley also recommends considering your style as a couple when planning engagement photos. “If you like paparazzi- style, flash photography, get glammed up and hit a boutique hotel or jazz bar,” she says. “Or if you’re more laid back, get cozy on the couch with an in-home session.” No matter what you and your partner choose to do, there are truly no wrong answers. Your engagement photos are a chance to tell your story to the world in an artfully authentic way.
