One of the hardest parts about planning a destination wedding has been thinking about what we would be able to travel with and what we simply would have to do without. There are certain items that are necessities, such as wedding-day apparel, and there are certain items that may vary in size based on what you choose, such as welcome gifts or wedding-party gifts. Finally, there are items that are not necessarily needed, but can be taken if you wish - this would include any decorative items.
The necessities: I highly recommend dedicating a carry-on suitcase to these items. It would be a nightmare if the checked bag with your bridal gown got lost or put on the wrong flight. I would put all wedding-related items in this bag. This would include: your bridal gown, the groom’s suit, bridal jewelry & undergarments, shoes and special gifts. If possible, I would also include the welcome gifts and wedding-party gifts.
- If your bridal gown doesn't fit in the suitcase, another option would be for you to carry it on separately. I have been told some flight crews will kindly hang it in a closet for you at no charge, but be prepared to consider it a carry-on item. If you’re worried, call your airline ahead of time to check the policy.
- Another option for wedding-party gifts is to deliver them before you travel. It saves a lot of space in your luggage!
The wanted items: You have to be picky about what decorative pieces you travel with, strictly due to luggage restrictions. Most resorts will let you ship items in advance, but there may be additional fees from the resort to receive and store them. Our resort will make almost anything we would like, so we wouldn’t have to travel with it, but it comes with a price. So, this is where you should think through what you want to travel with and what may be better left behind.
