The Dos and Don’ts of for Four-Legged Guests

Pets are family and for many couples, it’s natural to want them by your side on one of life’s biggest days. Whether it’s a dog trotting down the aisle or a cat inspiring a signature cocktail, including pets in weddings has become a beloved and photogenic trend. But before you plan for four-legged guests, it’s important to consider what is best for both your pet and your celebration.

Here is a guide to navigating pet inclusion, from determining whether your wedding is truly pet-friendly, to stress-free ways to include them, and creative alternatives for honoring pets who cannot attend.

1. Determine if Your Wedding Is Truly Pet-Friendly

Not every venue that says “pet-friendly” is fully equipped for animals. Check early to see if pets are allowed both indoors and outdoors, whether there are safe areas for breaks and water, and if loud music, fireworks, or other elements might be stressful. Outdoor venues such as ranches, private estates, or gardens tend to be the most accommodating, but terrain, temperature, and logistics all matter.

Do: Confirm rules in writing and let vendors know if your pet will be present.
Don’t: Assume your pet can join just because another couple’s did. The setup and policies may have changed.

2. Include Pets Without Stress or Disruption

Even calm pets can be overwhelmed by the excitement of a wedding day. The key is structure and support. Designate a trusted friend, family member, or pet sitter to handle walks, water breaks, and exits so you can focus on celebrating.

Limit your pet’s participation to a short, meaningful moment, such as the ceremony processional or pre-reception portraits. Once their role is complete, have them safely escorted home or to a quiet space.

Other ways to make things run smoothly include:

  • Scheduling pet-involved portraits first to avoid delays.
  • Bringing familiar items like a favorite blanket or toy.
  • Choosing a decorative collar, bowtie, or leash that is comfortable.

Do: Rehearse with your pet so they are familiar with the space and sounds.
Don’t: Force participation. If your pet shows signs of stress, let them sit this one out.

3. Honor Pets Who Cannot Attend

Not every pet can safely attend a wedding due to venue rules, travel, or temperament. Even when they cannot be present physically, there are creative ways to celebrate them:

  • Include pets through signature cocktail names, photo displays, or small personal details like bouquet charms.
  • Use custom cake toppers featuring your pet’s likeness or incorporate their image into signage, menus, or stationery.
  • Make a donation to a local animal rescue or shelter in their honor.

Subtle touches like these ensure your pet’s presence is felt and can become meaningful highlights for guests.

Do: Find ways to honor your pet that reflect your relationship.
Don’t: Feel pressured to include them physically. Sometimes small gestures are even more heartfelt.

A Thoughtful Balance

Including your pet in your wedding is about joy, not logistics. With careful planning and creativity, you can ensure your furry companion’s presence, whether in person or in spirit, enhances your celebration rather than complicates it. Thoughtful preparation ensures your four-legged family member is part of your love story in a way that is safe, meaningful and memorable.
