Once a girl gets engaged there are a few questions that they always hear: When is the date? Where are you getting married? What are your wedding colors? The fact that so many people consistently ask this last question makes choosing your color palette seem even more important and slightly overwhelming. So, choosing the color palette is one of the first things I would suggest a bride-to-be does after selecting the location of the big day. Having a go-to palette is the key to setting the tone and theme for your wedding. Will it be bright and playful? Light and elegant? Earthy and calming? Or bold and dramatic?
My favorite color is purple, so I knew right away I would be incorporating the color throughout our décor. Rather than just incorporating one shade of the color, I was drawn to a mix of dark plums and soft, dusty lilacs. I wanted to create depth, but keep the overall look very soft and romantic. When thinking of a color scheme, don’t forget to think of metallic tones as options as well! I love gold, silver and champagne tones and am using a mix of all three as shades to add a vintage touch to our theme.
Here are a few things I would suggest when putting together your wedding color palette:
CONSIDER THE LOCATION: Are there existing structures or backdrops present that dictate the style of the event? Wedding colors not only decide what your wedding looks like, but they can also determine how your wedding feels. Make sure your chosen hues coordinate not only with the colors of the space, but also the architecture for an overall cohesive design.
DON'T LIMIT YOURSELF TO JUST ONE COLOR: You are no longer limited to just one color to use in everything throughout the wedding! Choose a few focus colors, but feel free to build in other accent colors from there. Using multiple shades of the same hue can soften the overall look, while more contrasting colors can create a dramatic look. Adding in some neutrals and metallic tones can help ground any combination and draw the eye to the colors you want to stand out. I love using the Adobe Color Wheel to create sample color themes and see combinations others have put together. You can even upload an inspiration picture and find the exact colors used!
THINK ABOUT THE SEASON: If you don’t know where to begin, try thinking about the season. Not only will it help set a mood for the day, but more items may be seasonally available to coordinate, especially flowers. Ultimately, there should be no restrictions as any color can be used throughout the year if it is what you LOVE!
