At the end of the day, weddings are truly all about expressing love and commitment between you and your hubby, but what better way to celebrate the occasion than by dancing the night away with your guests! There is no doubt about it, when it comes to wedding receptions, music can be the heart and soul of the party. It definitely sets the tone for the night, whether it fills the air with romantic, subdued music or brings on an upbeat dance fest. Either way, getting your guests to break out their dancing shoes generally starts with this decision … band or DJ?
Here are some of the pros and cons that helped me decide what music selection will appear at our own reception!
BAND:
Pros -
- Great if you have a specific theme or genre you would like the band to play
- Makes an impressive visual statement
- Can be more energizing, exciting and unique to guests
Cons -
- Work within pre-determined set lists, which may limit what song choices are available
- Generally this option is more expensive
- Require breaks in the entertainment
- Can be louder overall
DJ:
Pros -
- You can enjoy music by the original artist
- Generally have an unlimited music selection
- Typically more affordable
- Can play nonstop
- Takes up little space in your venue
Cons -
- Little “wow” factor
- Transitions pose the threat of being tough to handle
- Can be hard to preview their work – usually one must go by a referral alone
Ultimately we chose to go with a DJ. We really didn’t want to lose any more area in the reception room and knew the space a band would take just wouldn’t be an option for us. Luckily, we have attended many weddings of friends with a DJ that always kept us on our feet. Needless to say, we booked him right away and are excited to celebrate by dancing the night away!
