Bridal gown shopping holds a special place in my heart not only because it was one of my most anticipated wedding tasks, but also because I have been lucky enough to be a part of so many other bride's gown shopping experiences as a Bridal Consultant in Omaha. I love helping brides not only find “the dress,” but also just navigate through what can sometimes be an overwhelming experience so it is with pleasure that I get to share tips and advice with all of you.

The anticipation leading up to this appointment can be immense. I would advise brides that preparation for your appointment can go a long way towards calming any nerves. Here are some of my tips:

  1. Do some research before you start making appointments. If you have something specific in mind, look at the designers carried by local bridal shops so you can make appointments at the ones that seem to fit your search the best.
  2. Make an appointment! It’s usually required and it ensures a consultant is available to assist you. A consultant is almost always required to help you put on the dresses, but you’ll want their help anyways. They can tell you how a dress is supposed to fit and any options or custom changes available.
  3. Discuss the budget. I cannot stress this enough - even if your budget is flexible. It helps make your search productive. I have helped several brides shopping for their gown who say price isn’t a concern now as they are just getting an idea. Usually, either there is some number that’s too extreme or they fall in love with a dress only to walk away and realize the gown was more than they wanted to spend.
  4. Carefully consider who to invite to your appointment. While opinions are good, too many opinions are bad. I recommend at the most three people who have a good understanding of your style and have the ability to consider your style and not their own. I have noticed that younger helpers have more difficulty being unbiased and large groups can be distracting.
  5. Dress up a little and bring the proper undergarments. It can feel bizarre to be in a beautiful dress while having casual or relaxed hair and/or no make-up. Proper undergarments, such as a strapless bra and nude or light underwear will ensure there are no distractions from the dress itself.
  6. Take a deep breath, relax and trust your bridal consultant! These things can help to ensure the experience is enjoyable and exciting!
