Honestly, there's no wrong way to make a flower crown. Whether you want to use fresh flowers or silk ones, it's all about your personal style, budget and craftiness.
My flower girls will be wearing flower crowns, and I am opting to create them myself using silk flowers. I have the time, since my wedding is in August, and I certainly don't trust myself to get them finished a night or two before the wedding with real flowers!
After a little trial and error, this was the method that worked best for me:
- Measure the head(s) of your chosen flower-crown wearers.
- Purchase some simple crafting wire that is flexible enough to mold into a full circle.
- Select desired greenery to use as your base throughout the wire. This will also be used to fill in space between your flowers.
- Once you have a base of greenery twisted throughout the wire, start adding flowers!
- Be sure to leave at least a 1/2 inch of stem on your flowers (whether or not you're using real or silk flowers).
- Use additional wire to twist around the stems and attach them to the base of the crown by twisting the wire wherever you would like to place the flower.
- Continue this until your crown is at its desired fullness.
As intimidating as it seems in the beginning, making flower crowns has been one of my easier DIY projects during the wedding-planning process. You could even consider recruiting a few of your bridesmaids to have a wine night and make an event of this project. Happy crafting!
