Let’s talk rings – because I know I’m not the only girl to look at Nebraska Wedding Day before getting engaged!
My fiancé likes to point out that when he proposed I didn’t even look at the ring. I said yes, grabbed him up off his knee and hugged him so hard. After I’d smothered him while squealing and jumping up and down, he asked, “Well don’t you want to look at the ring?” Which, of course, I did! But at that moment it was all about the him asking me to be with him forever. Anyway, enough schmoosy stuff…
First, it’s a GOOD idea to look online to see what styles you like. I believe “cushion cut micro pave engagement ring setting” may have been one of my top google searches in the last year. (Gorgeous! I just googled it again, and thirty minutes later, I’m back.)
Second, it’s a BAD idea to look only online or in magazines. My engagement ring is exactly what I want – and it is not a cushion cut nor does it have micro pave diamonds. YOU MUST GO LOOK AT DIAMONDS AND SETTINGS IN PERSON. Remember that all pictures are enhanced. My dream ring was fabulous online and in the magazine ad but it was not what I wanted when I saw it in person. Rings can be so different on your finger!
Third, it’s a GREAT idea to talk with your guy about what you want. I wanted him to know the styles and shapes I loved, but I also very much wanted to be surprised. I didn’t want to pick my ring out myself, but I also didn’t want him to be thrown into something he had no idea how to do and for the result to be disappointing for both of us. (Plus, as he will tell you, I’ve been known to change my mind and I can be particular sometimes. So I felt some guidance from me would be helpful.)
So how did it work for us? Bobby and I met with an amazingly helpful and knowledgeable woman at Nebraska Diamond. I had the time of my life there. I saw hundreds and hundreds of settings and narrowed it down to three. Each one was a different style than the others and none were exactly what I had said I wanted before going in (cue the confused and nervous fiancé). When we looked at center stone diamonds, I realized I liked round diamonds much better than cushion cut ones (at this point, Bobby was confident I had no idea what I wanted). And then I let him take over. I didn’t know exactly what setting I was getting, nor did I know the specific diamond, but I knew that I l would love each one and that I would be surprised. He did a wonderful job.
