We have our cakes ordered! Yes, cakes. As in more than one. :)
My mom and I met with Char (Lincoln's Cakes by Char) on Friday and I've been salivating for wedding cake ever since. Char's cakes are seriously the best I've ever had. As I'd mentioned before, I worked at the Lincoln Station down in the Haymarket when I was in high school, so I got to taste test a cake or two from different vendors in the Lincoln area. Char's cakes were always delicious, and that's the most important part of the cake for me! It was a no-brainer for me to ask her to do our wedding, too.
Prior to our meeting last week, I gathered a few pictures of designs that I liked (including the picture below), but then was able to go through hundreds of photos of cakes that Char has already done, too. From early on in our planning, I thought it would be fun to do something a little bit different from having a singular wedding cake plus a smaller groom's cake, so Jerad & I will be having 2 cakes at our reception. Both will be round and tiered. The more-traditional wedding cake will be 4 tiers (alternating between raspberry swirl and white wedding cake flavors) with buttercream frosting. The design in the frosting will also alternate between the layers, and there will be a layer of flowers between the 2nd & 3rd. We don't have a cake topper yet, though I've been thinking about a crystal monogram. If we don't do that, the cake will probably have flowers on top, too. Our 2nd cake (more like the groom's cake) will be 3 tiers of all chocolaty goodness - chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, decorated with a scallop design and chocolate curls on top.
When we figured how many servings we would need and size of cakes, etc., I decided that it wasn't important for us to save the top layer of the cake to be frozen until our 1st anniversary. We'll cut into the top layer if we need to serve it, then order ourselves a fresh cake a year down the road. If we don't end up cutting into that layer at the reception, then I guess we'll be set. Let's hear from you, fellow brides-to-be: are you planning to save cake to thaw out for your anniversary? Or do you have something different that you're doing with your cake table (like serving sheet cakes or cake bites)? I'm also curious about whether you're going for cakes that are frosted vs. covered with fondant?
Only 80 days left to go for this bride-to-be!
