The fit of a garment is everything - it can completely make or break an outfit. You will look at your wedding pictures for years to come and you want your dress to fit like a glove so all your best features are enhanced. This past weekend I went to visit my seamstress for my first round of alterations and I came back with plenty of helpful tips, hopefully they can help you along as well.
1. Shop around for your seamstress. While it can be easy to use your bridal store as a one stop shop, typically independent seamstresses will cost less most of the time. Also keep in mind that during any busy wedding season seamstresses like anyone else can get busy so call in advance for your appointment.
2. Come to your appointment prepared. For your first appointment you won't need your shoes just yet, but it helps to have questions ready. Be ready to ask about bustle options, how detailed and how long the alterations will take and any additional items like options for adding or removing straps. You might have a vision of your dress that isn't quite possible because of the fabric or cut so it's best to be realistic about your options from the get go.
3. Bring someone with you to your appointments. Whether it's your mom or your maid of honor have someone else with you to give a second opinion and possibly take some pictures so you can see the progress.
4. Think about asking if your seamstress can also make your veil. Veils have an extremely high mark up (I mean $400 for tulle and a comb, really?). Depending on the detail of your veil or how much you would like it to match your dress a seamstress can make it for you for a much lower cost.
Enjoy your week!

Megan
