{fitness challenge} week seven

I stink at setting goals.  I am good at working toward goals but when it comes to setting real, practical, and defined goals I’m not so great at it. So from week one when my coach told me to set a goal… I brainstormed and spent time thinking about what I really wanted to achieve. On my first testing day I wrote on my goal sheet: “Look better. Feel better. Lose body fat.”  (That was the best I had as I sucked air after running the mile.)

None of these things (except the body fat) were very measurable. Sure, you can technically measure them based on how you feel, but they’re not specific at all.  Some days I feel great. Other days I don’t. Some days I think I look great. Other days I don’t. (I think that’s part of being female, no?)

I continued to think about a more measureable, detailed, and specific goal, and I didn’t really know what to do. I’ve never measured a before/after body fat percentage so I have no idea what’s a realistic percentage of body fat to lose in 10 weeks.  I don’t care a lot about running so to say I want to drop X-amount-of-minutes doesn’t really get me motivated.  I know I want to improve in the sit ups, push ups and mile but I just don’t know how much… or how much I care about those specific numbers. I simply want to be more fit, toned and stronger after 10 weeks! Sounds like I’m in a real dilemma, huh?

Then, a few weeks ago, a thought came to my mind. What do I want to look like on my wedding day? Not what do I want to look like on August 13th, 2011 when my 10-week fitness challenge comes to an end (but the fitness journey does not). The big picture, and ultimate goal, is feeling like the most fabulous bride on April 28th, 2012 when I marry my best friend.  I half-jokingly told Dan, Sarah my coach, and about anyone that asked, I want to look like…. (wait for it) ….

 ….Beyoncé.

So today, I’m cracking up as I watch Beyoncé’s new video for Best Thing I Never Had… Is this some big coincidence that of all the scenarios possible, she chose to shoot a good portion of the video on a fictional wedding day?!  Looks like I've got a video to keep me motivated! Wedding dress and all.
