Chey was a mother on a mission: trying to find a skilled basketball trainer for her sons. When Derrick answered her request online, she couldn't have known she was about to meet the love of her life. Derrick began coaching the boys—and not long after, he shot his shot (pun intended) and the couple began building a relationship.
The couple's October wedding was a celebration of everything they cherish most: autumn and their love for their community, both given and chosen. Inspired by fall foliage, the color palette featured rich oranges, crimson reds, earthy tans and forest green. Derrick stood out in a bold burnt orange suit, while Chey carried a bouquet of seasonal blooms accented with pampas grass and soft neutrals. Both wore meaningful pins honoring late loved ones, a touching reminder of the people who couldn't be present but remained close to their hearts.
The sunset ceremony was both heartfelt and symbolic. After exchanging personal vows, the couple blended sand in a unity ritual, concluding with a traditional African American custom: jumping the broom—a symbolic gesture representing the start of a new chapter in their lives.
As the light faded and day turned to dusk, guests flowed into a lively reception filled with soul food from Famous Dave's, emotional speeches from nearly every member of the wedding party and a packed dance floor. Later in the evening, Chey changed into a second dress to dance the night away beside her new husband and their closest loved ones.
"We thought our day was amazing," she says. "It wasn't over the top, [it was] just right."
